Amboseli & Kilimanjaro Views

Depart Nairobi around 8am for the four-hour drive south past Machakos and Emali, with a stop at a curio market where you can pick up cotton kikoys and hand-carved wooden figures. Arrive at your Amboseli lodge in time for lunch on the deck with — on a clear day — Africa's highest mountain looming across the horizon. Your afternoon game drive introduces you to Amboseli's famous 'big tuskers' — a small remaining population of bull elephants whose ivory sweeps almost to the ground. Sundowner beside a swamp where hundreds of hippo and countless flamingo cluster.

Pre-dawn wake-up — the mountain is most likely to be cloud-free at first light, and when it emerges pink above the plains it is one of the great sights of Africa. Return for a lazy breakfast, then explore Amboseli's five distinct ecosystems: the dry lake bed, the volcanic hills, the sulphur springs, the acacia woodland, and the wetlands that draw elephants from far and wide. Your guide will read footprints, dung, and broken branches like a book. Devote the morning to the big elephant families — Amboseli's herds are the most studied on Earth, and your guide will point out matriarchs who have been named and monitored since the 1970s. Photography opportunities are unmatched; bring extra memory cards. After lunch, visit a Maasai boma where you'll be welcomed with traditional song, invited into a manyatta to see how it is built from cow dung and thatch, and shown the significance of colour in beadwork. Sunset walk with a Maasai spear-bearer through the acacia woodland, spotting giraffe and dik-dik along the way.

Sunrise game drive — a final chance to see the mountain and, perhaps, a leopard just returned from an all-night hunt. Leisurely breakfast at the lodge, then start the road transfer back to Nairobi with a lunch stop at a well-known Kilimanjaro-view restaurant. Arrive Nairobi mid-afternoon — plenty of time for an onward connection or a Karen suburb shopping stop for last-minute gifts.
