Masai Mara Big Five Safari

Your Vines host meets you inside the terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, whisks you through the fast-track lane, and drives you to a leafy boutique hotel in a quiet Nairobi neighbourhood — a soft landing after your long flight. Freshen up, then join your safari designer for a relaxed briefing dinner: we walk through the days ahead, brief you on wildlife etiquette, and answer every last-minute question. Early rest — tomorrow the wild begins.

After breakfast, choose your approach: a scenic 45-minute bush flight over the Great Rift Valley, or a comfortable road transfer with a viewpoint stop where the escarpment falls away in two enormous waves. Arrive at your intimate tented camp in time for a lantern-lit lunch, then straight out on your first game drive. Within the first hour you'll likely tick off zebra, wildebeest, topi and Thomson's gazelle — and by golden hour, elephants, giraffes and, with luck, a resident lion pride. Sundowners are served on the plains as the sky turns copper.

Dawn departure with hot flasks and pastries — you'll want to be in the field before the light. This is the day the guides plan around: full flexibility to follow the wildlife where the action is. Depending on season, that might mean tracking a leopard through the fig-tree country of the Mara Triangle, following cheetah brothers as they hunt gazelle in open plain, or positioning near a river crossing. Bush breakfast under an acacia, an afternoon rest at camp, then out again for the golden hour when predators start to stir. Optional dawn hot-air balloon safari (add-on) for a bird's-eye view of the herds.

Head to the Mara River's most photographed bends — a nervy line of wildebeest and zebra often gathers to cross, harassed by resident crocodiles that can reach five metres. Watch, wait, and let your guide's radio bring word of movement. In the afternoon we exchange the vehicle for boots and walk into a Maasai manyatta: village elders share the significance of the beads on their necks, the ochre in their hair, and the songs they have sung for a thousand years. This isn't a performance — it's a conversation. Return to camp for a bush BBQ under the southern stars.

One last dawn drive — the odds of a fresh sighting are always highest at first light. Brunch is set on the deck with a view of the plains you've now come to know intimately. Fly back to Nairobi at midday and, if there's time before your international departure, use our complimentary day-room to shower and repack. Your driver returns you to Jomo Kenyatta for the flight home — luggage lighter, memory card fuller, plans already forming for a return.
