Lake Nakuru & Naivasha Weekend

Depart Nairobi around 8am, climbing out of the city into the Great Rift Valley. Photo stop at the famous viewpoint where the escarpment falls dramatically away — on a clear day you'll see the dormant volcano Mount Longonot rising in the middle distance. Arrive Lake Nakuru National Park for lunch, then out for an afternoon game drive to find the resident white rhinos (often within the first hour), Rothschild's giraffe, and — depending on water level — the pink-cloud spectacle of tens of thousands of flamingo on the alkaline lake.

Morning game drive around the lake's forested loop road — good chances for leopard in the yellow-barked acacias, plus buffalo, waterbuck, and the endangered black rhino if you're lucky. Late morning, transfer south to Lake Naivasha (2 hours). Lunch at your lakeside lodge, then the highlight: a cycling safari through Hells Gate National Park, riding among zebras, giraffes, and warthogs beneath the vertical basalt cliffs that inspired the landscapes of The Lion King. Optional hike through the atmospheric Hell's Gate Gorge.

Morning boat safari on Lake Naivasha — get within metres of hippos wallowing in the shallows, see fish eagles diving for tilapia, and glide past the flooded fever trees where cormorants nest by the hundreds. Continental breakfast served on the water. Late morning drive back to Nairobi, arriving early afternoon — perfect for an evening flight or a leisurely last dinner in the city.
